Description
Up for your consideration is a set of two reproduction WWII M1911 .45 ACP SHOT CARTRIDGE cartons, one with the M12 EVANSVILLE ORDNANCE PLANT label, and one with the M15 REMINGTON ARMS COMPANY label .During August 1943 the Army Air Force issued a requirement for a .45 Cal. shot cartridge to be used by combat air crew for survival purposes. Initial development was done by Remington Arms, and patterned after their commercial riot control cartridge for the Thompson submachine gun. The first cartridge received the T23 nomenclature, later changed to M12. It had a brass case with a red waxed paper bullet containing #71/2 chilled lead shot. The size of the round made it necessary to manually load the shells in the pistol, so an instruction sheet was included in each box. Both Remington and the Evansville Ordnance Plant made the M12 cartridge. Almost immediately reports came back from the combat zones that the M12 would not hold up in hot humid conditions. This led to the development of the M15 cartridge by Remington in December 1943. The M15 used an extended brass case, with a waterproof wad holding the shot inside. The M15 went into production by Remington in March 1944, continuing until the end of the war. Both the M12 and M15 cartridges were packed in the Air Forces survival kits and survival vest. All the boxes were sealed inside a foil-lined paper wrapper for protection against moisture. Both the M12 and M15 box had the lot number stamped on the outer wrapper, while the M15 had the lot number applied to the inner box as well. Photos in this listing show the marked outer wrapper as well as one example of the instruction sheet.
