Description
Antique 1791 English Georgian Sterling Silver Gravy Sauce Boat Tureen w/ LadlePresented is an antique, English sterling silver gravy or sauce tureen with ladle made by Henry Chawner of London in 1791. The double handled boat or tureen is raised on a pedestal base and has acanthus leaf accents on either side. The lid and body have a classic design and the piece has never been monogrammed. The sauce ladle, which is American and from the late 1800's, has a beaded edge and a very finely engraved crest of a dragon in a crown. The ladle is not original to the gravy tureen, but it fits well into the notch of the lid.
The underside of the tureen and the lid are marked with the crowned leopard's head for London, the lion passant for sterling silver, a duty mark of the king's head, a date letter q for the year 1791 and a maker's mark for Henry Chawner. The back of the ladle is marked for Gorham and sterling.
This piece is in excellent overall condition, especially for its age. There is some minor surface wear and some tiny dings here and there, but no major damages and no repairs.
Width: 8 1/4 inches.
